New Year, New Research Grants
Happy 2015, everyone! Here are two types of funding opportunities for scientists, both of which will help advance animal welfare, albeit in very different ways:
- The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Foundation is inviting grant proposals in three areas that improve the diagnosis, treatment, understanding, or prevention of disease in animals. Funds will be awarded for clinical studies focused on feline chronic renal disease (up to $50,000 for up to 2 years), oncology within any animal species (up to $25,000 for up to 2 years), and in partnership with animal health company Zoetis, small animal respiratory disease (up to $20,000 for up to 2 years). Further information on funding guidelines and eligibility requirements for each of these three grant opportunities is available on ACVIMF’s “Call for Proposals” page. The application deadline for all three programs is March 9, 2015.
- The International Foundation for Ethical Research is providing fellowship grants of up to $15,000 for up to three years for graduate students whose course of study most effectively advances alternative methodologies to the use of animals in research, testing, and education. See the complete Request for Proposals (RFP) for further information on funding guidelines and eligibility requirements. The application deadline is April 20, 2015.

- The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is awarding Midwestern Disaster Resiliency Grants to improve the capacity and preparedness of disaster-response organizations and government agencies meeting animal welfare needs in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Grants are expected to range from $500 to $5,000 on average, with certain equipment packages considered up to $25,000. See the full grant guidelines for further information; the deadline to apply is November 28, 2014.
- The Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation, in partnership with the Morris Animal Foundation, is providing a total pool of approximately $200,000 in grant funding for 5-10 innovative studies that aim to establish a link between ownership of pets (including dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, and small animals) or animal-assisted activity/therapy and improvement in mental or physical health in humans. Detailed grant guidelines provide more information on how to apply; the application deadline is December 1, 2014.
- The American Fund for Alternatives to Animal Research, in partnership with the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS), is awarding a one-year (possibly renewable) postdoctoral fellowship grant of $40,000 to a female researcher interested in developing, validating, or using non-animal alternatives to investigate issues related to women’s health or sex differences.
